HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 20, 2006 -- The 20th-ranked Towson Tigers topped the James Madison Dukes 1-0 in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Friday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The win extends Towson's unbeaten streak to 10, and the Tigers have now won eight successive games.
Towson sophomore Nino Mangione (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored the game-winning goal with 34:53 left to play in the second half. He slid the ball past JMU red-shirt senior goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) after receiving a pass from senior Sebastian Haensel (Leipzig, Germany/U. of Leipzig), who was credited with an assist on the play.
The Dukes had several scoring opportunities in the final 20 minutes of the match.  Senior Kurt Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/IMG) had a shot from 30 yards in the 73rd minute that sailed over the top of the goal. In the 77th minute Morsink got past Towson junior goalkeeper Billy Chiles (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) but his shot was saved off the line by senior Nigel Marples (Delta, British Columbia/North Delta).
JMU held a 8-6 advantage on shots and edged the Tigers 5-3 in corner kicks. Â Trapp finished with one save and Chiles had three saves for the match.
The Dukes dropped their overall record to 8-5-2 and 3-4-2 in the CAA. Towson improved their record to 12-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the CAA.
JMU will travel to George Mason on Sunday, Oct. 22 for a 2 p.m. contest against the Patriots, who are ranked second in the CAA.
