WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 5, 2006 - Six-foot-9 forward Jeff Green hit for three of his team's nine first-half three-point field goals, sparking Georgetown to a big early advantage, and the Hoyas went on to beat James Madison 89-53 in non-conference men's basketball Tuesday at the Verizon Center.
Green had 13 first-half points, and Georgetown hit on nine of 17 three-point tries during the opening period while taking a 47-29 lead. The Hoyas had four three-pointers just more than five minutes into the game.
Georgetown hit on 16 of 33 three-point attempts overall and shot 58 percent (32-55) from the field for the game. The Hoyas got three-pointers from seven players, had a 31-20 rebounding edge and committed only eight turnovers to JMU's 15.
Georgetown improved to 5-3 with the victory while JMU fell to 2-5.
JMU led 3-2 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Joe Posey (Colonial Beach, Va./Notre Dame Academy) on its first possession, but Georgetown went up 6-3 on DaJuan Summers' three-pointer at the 18:33 mark of the opening half and led the rest of the way.
JMU still was within 9-7 on junior center Gabriel Chami's (Cordoba, Argentina/New Hampton) field goal three minutes into the game, but Georgetown got the next 10 points for a 19-7 lead and was up by at least nine points the rest of the way.
Green hit on six of eight shots overall, including three of five from three-point range, and finished with a game-high 17 points, four rebounds and five assists in 24 minutes. Jesse Sapp added 16 points, hitting on three of six three-point attempts, and Jonathan Wallace 14 points (four-of-six three-point shooting) for the Hoyas.
Freshman guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) led JMU with 14 points, and sophomore forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) had 10 points for the Dukes
Curtis hit on five of eight shots and had a team-leading five assists, and James hit of four of six field goal attempts and had four rebounds. James scored in double figures for the seventh straight game this season and for the 11th straight contest over the last two campaigns.
JMU shot 44.2 percent overall from the field (19-43) and 28.6 percent (4-14) from three-point range.
JMU is back in action Sunday (Dec. 10) in a 2 p.m. home game with Dartmouth.
