The Tribe lost its third in a row and fifth in six games, falling to 5-10 overall and to 1-3 in the CAA.
Stoneburner's fourth homer of the year was a three-run blast that gave the Dukes a 13-9 lead in the seventh inning. Â Senior right fielder Matt Bristow (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) snapped a tie game just prior to Stoneburner's trip to the plate with an RBI single to right, his third hit of the game. Â Bristow also had a pair of RBI doubles in the contest.
The Dukes built a 6-2 lead after four innings, capped by a two-run homer by sophomore center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey).
The Tribes' biggest rally of the afternoon came in the fifth when they sent 10 batters to the plate, and the first six came around to score. First baseman Jeff Lunardi lined a homer just over the fence in left with a pair of runners aboard to give the Tribe a 9-6 lead.
The Dukes responded with their third three-run inning of the game. Kulbacki, who finished 2-for-4 and drove in four for a team-best 25 RBIs this season, tripled in a pair of runs to cut the margin to 9-8, and he scored on a single up the middle by junior right fielder Mitchell Moses (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin).
Senior first baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) singled in his first at bat to extend his career-best hitting streak to 11 games. He later slammed a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth to account for the final runs of the day. It was Schill's sixth homer of the year, five of which have come in the last four games. The Dukes have hit a JMU-record pace 31 homers to date.
Junior left-hander Jacob Cook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) picked up the win to improve to 2-1. He gave up one earned run on one hit and fanned two in two innings of relief.
Redshirt junior Clay McKim (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) earned the save with three innings out of the pen. He gave up a pair of runs, one earned, in the seventh before settling in to retire eight of the last nine he faced.
Game two is Saturday at 1 p.m.
