HARRISONBURG, Va., March 17, 2006 – Sophomore center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and senior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) clocked a pair of homers each and combined to drive in 11 runs in James Madison's 15-5 defeat of Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association baseball Friday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
The Dukes (14-4, 4-0) matched their longest winning streak since 1988 with their 14th victory in a row, which is also the second longest among Division I streaks nationally. Sixth-ranked Mississippi State (14-0) opened Southeastern Conference play last night with an 8-2 home win against fifth-ranked Tennessee, while Kansas State caught the Dukes with a doubleheader sweep against North Dakota. No. 1 Florida State has the nation's longest streak at 17 games following an 11-2 win Friday night at Virginia Tech.
The Blue Hens slipped to 9-4 overall while playing their CAA opener.
Kulbacki started his second 4-for-4 performance of the week with a two-run homer in the first inning, followed directly by a Cowgill blast. It was the second time this season the duo has gone back-to-back in a game. Their homers launched the Dukes on their way to a 9-3 lead after three innings.
Kulbacki drew an intentional walk in the fifth, but Cowgill hit a three-run homer to foil the strategy. The next time Kulbacki came to the plate, he connected for his 10th homer of the season, a two-run blast as he finished the day with a career-best five RBIs. Cowgill tied his career-high with six RBIs.
Junior right-hander Travis Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) struck out a career-high 12 in a career-long eight innings on the mound to improve his record to 3-1. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and walked two.
The Blue Hens scored all of their runs on homers as sophomore center fielder Brandon Menchaca (Wilmington, Del./Concord), junior left fielder Bryan Hagerich (Somerset, Pa.Somerset), and redshirt freshman designated hitter Scott Shockley (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) hit solo shots, and senior shortstop Todd Davison (Somers Pt., N.J./St. Augustine Prep) popped a two-run homer.
The Dukes also got two hits apiece from senior designated hitter Matt Sluder (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and junior shortstop Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin).
