HARRISONBURG, Va., April 14, 2006 – Senior first baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) went 4-for-4 and junior shortstop Rob Altieri (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) hit a solo homer to lead James Madison to a 6-3 victory against George Mason in Colonial Athletic Association baseball Friday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
The Dukes upped their overall record to 23-12 and solidified their hold on second place in the CAA at 12-4. Mason slipped to 13-20 overall, 7-9 in CAA play.
Altieri's homer was his third of the year and snapped a 3-all tie in the bottom of the fifth. It was JMU's 66th homer of the season, the second-most in the program's 37-year history.
Mason senior catcher Robby Jacobsen (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) had tied the game in the top of the fifth with his team-high eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left. Jacobsen finished 3-for-5 with the two RBIs.Â
Senior shortstop Mike Genovese (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and freshman center fielder Spencer Wiggins (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) each had a pair of hits for the Patriots.
Schill picked up a pair RBI-singles, each of which drove in sophomore center fielder Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), who had doubled to reach with two outs in each case.
Redshirt senior left-hander Greg Nesbitt (Drumore, Pa.,/Solanco) improved his record to 5-3 with 6 1/3 innings on the mound. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits and four walks while whiffing three.
Junior right-hander Bobby Lasko (Athens, Pa./Athens) threw the only perfect inning for the Dukes, in the ninth, to gain his fourth save. He entered after redshirt-junior right-hander Clay McKim (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. McKim left two inherited runners stranded in the seventh and allowed only one baserunner with a walk in the eighth before getting his second strikeout.
Mason starter Dan Jaycox (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits and three walks. He fanned seven. Senior Phil Stone (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) allowed just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three over the final three frames.
Game two of the three-game series is Saturday
