BOSTON, Mass., Jan. 24, 2007Â - Three Northeastern players had six points each during a 20-4 second-scoring burst that gave their team control, and the host Huskies went on to beat James Madison 67-51 in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Wednesday.
Northeastern led only 35-33 just more than seven minutes into the final half but dominated play the rest of the way. JMU had only one field goal over the next 7:09, and Northeastern opened a 55-37 margin by the 6:35 mark of the second half.
The victory raised Northeastern's overall record to 6-14 and their CAA mark to 4-5 while JMU fell to 6-13 overall and to 3-6 in the CAA. The Dukes had a two-game winning streak snapped while Northeastern improved to 6-1 in home games this season.
Northeastern shot 68.2 percent (15-22) overall during the second half and hit on six of seven shots from three-point range during the final period. The Huskies shot 53.2 percent overall (25-47) to JMU's 45.2 percent (19-42), had a 27-21 rebounding edge and committed only 14 turnovers to JMU's 19.
Forward Manny Adako and guards Matt Janning and Bobby Kelly were the Huskies with six points each during Northeastern's decisive second-half burst.
Adako started the run with a field goal at the 12:13 mark and added baskets at the 10:36 and 8:23 marks; Kelly had three-pointers on consecutive Northeastern possessions midway through the burst; and Janning capped the run with a four-point play.
JMU fell behind 12-5 but rallied to tie the score at 20 and trailed only 23-22 at halftime. The Dukes went ahead on two occasions early during the final half, 24-23 on a junior Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) field goal at 19:17 and 27-26 on sophomore guard Colbey Santos' (East Wareham, Mass./Tabor Academy) three-pointer at 16:42.
Northeastern went in front to stay, 32-29 on Adrian Martinez' three-pointer with 15:51 remaining. Martinez' field goal was the second of three shots from three-point range that the Huskies hit during the opening 5:44 of the final half.
Janning, a 6-foot-4 freshman, led all scorers with 23 points and was among four Huskies to reach double figures in scoring. He had three three-point field goals, five rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes.
Freshman guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) with 13 points was JMU's only double-figure scorer.
JMU is back in action for home CAA games Saturday (Jan. 27) and Monday (Jan. 29). The Dukes meet George Mason at 2 p.m. Saturday and Towson at 7 p.m. Monday. The game with George Mason will be televised by Comcast Middle Atlantic.
