RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 15, 2007 – James Madison University junior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's offensive player of the week for his play Saturday (Oct. 13) in JMU's 44-27 football victory at the University of Rhode Island.
Landers set JMU's game records for yards of total offense (408) and rushing yards by a quarterback and threw for three touchdowns as the Dukes won their sixth-straight game. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 242 yards and ran 28 times for 166 yards (statistics reflect several updates from Saturday determined to be correct by Rhode Island and JMU officials).
Saturday's victory improved JMU's overall record to 6-1 and its CAA mark to 4-0. It also helped the Dukes move from ninth to eighth in the weekly Football Championship Subdivision polls by The Sports Network and the division's coaches.
Landers surpassed the previous JMU game total offense record of 407 yards, set by Matt LeZotte (2001-04) in a 45-44 double-overtime loss at Villanova in 2001. His rushing effort bettered John Bowers' (1976-78) old team quarterback game rushing record of 164 yards, set in 1977 in a 42-27 win over Salisbury.
Landers also was the CAA offensive player of the week after a 300-yard passing effort in JMU's 35-7 win over Villanova Sept. 29.
Landers at Rhode Island set a career high for touchdown passes and had his third 100-yard rushing effort and his third 200-yard passing game of the season. He hit sophomore wide receiver Rockeed McCarter (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) with a 56-yard scoring pass on JMU's second play and later connected with sophomore tight end Mike Caussin (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) on a nine-yard touchdown pass and redshirt freshman wide receiver Marcus Turner (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) on a 31-yarder.
Landers raised his season passing yards total to 1,226 yards and his season touchdown passes total to 10. Through seven games this season he has run for 678 yards, raising his career rushing yards total to 1,112. He has completed 72.8 percent of his passes (91-125) this season.
JMU is idle this Saturday (Oct. 20) and will return to action Oct. 27 in a noon CAA game against Richmond. The game will be part of JMU's annual homecoming activities and will be televised by regional cable affiliate Comcast SportsNet Middle Atlantic.
Also honored Monday by the CAA with weekly awards were Hofstra's Gian Villante, Richmond's Derek Hatcher and William & Mary's Cameron Dohse.
Villante won CAA defensive player of the week honors after leading Hofstra to a 20-3 win at Towson. He had eight tackles, including five solo stops, as Towson was held to just 70 yards on the ground.
Hatcher, the CAA special teams player of the week, helped Richmond to a 42-0 win over Stony Brook. He finished the day with 141 yards on five punt returns, including a 66-yarder for a touchdown.
Dohse received CAA rookie of the week honors after helping William & Mary to a 21-20 win at Maine. He was Tribe quarterback Jake Phillips' favorite target on the day with a game-high seven catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
