ATLANTA, Ga., Oct. 26, 2007 ? James Madison University senior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) had a career night with 31 kills and 21 digs, but it was Georgia State University pulling out the 3-2 victory with clutch play in a wild back and forth Colonial Athletic Association volleyball match on Friday evening.
GSU (15-11, 5-5 CAA) defeated JMU (14-9, 5-4 CAA) by game scores of 36-34, 19-30, 37-35, 21-30, and 23-21. JMU dominated nearly every statistical category except the score with a 94-70 advantage in kills, .243-.164 in hitting percentage, 89-66 in assists, and 103-77 in digs. While the Dukes won easily in games two and four, it was the clutch play of the Panthers in the tightly-contested games one, three, and five that proved the difference. JMU failed to extend a four-match winning streak to five for the third time this season.
Despite the loss, it was a night of statistical milestones for the Dukes both as a team and individually. JMU had two players with more than 20 digs for the first time since Oct. 22, 2004 and five players with more than 10 digs for the first time since Oct. 27 of last season. The 94 kills were the first time over 80 since Sept. 11, 2005, and the 89 assists were the most since at least the mid 1990s.
Individually, it was a night to remember for Halls, who finished with 31 kills on 76 attempts with 14 errors for a .224 percentage. Her 31 kills, 21 digs, four service aces, and 37.5 total points were all career highs. She also had five blocks. Halls posted her third double-double, all in the last five matches. She is the first JMU player to top 30 kills since Lindsay Collingwood (1996-99) had 33 on Nov. 23, 1996, the first player with 30 points since Danielle Heinbaugh (1998-01) had 30 on Oct. 21, 2001, and the first player with 20 kills and 20 digs since Emilee Hussack (2002-05) had 24 and 29 on Oct. 22, 2004. Halls moved into fourth all-time at JMU with 1,180 kills, passing Karla Gessler's (1997-2000) 1,157. She also climbed into fifth in career block assists with 279, passing Gessler's 275.
Senior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) had 34 digs while playing in four of the five games in the match. It was her third match of the season with more than 30 digs. Pierson became the first player in JMU history and the second in CAA history to pass 2,000 digs in her career.&nbs
