PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 30, 2007 – The Philadelphia Eagles Monday (Oct. 29) added former James Madison football standout Akeem Jordan to their 53-man active roster.
Jordan, who played at JMU from 2003-06 and was the 2006 Atlantic 10 Football Conference defensive player of the year, replaced Matt McCoy on the Philadelphia roster. McCoy, a second-round draft choice in 2005, was cut by the Eagles Monday.
"This gives Jordan an opportunity get up with the 53-man roster," Philadelphia coach Andy Reid was quoted as a saying on the team's Web site. "Matt did a nice job when he was here. We just thought we would make the switch. I'm sure Matt is going to hook on with somebody else and do a great job for them."
Jordan was with the Eagles throughout the preseason and recently has been on their practice squad. He initially was on their 53-man squad but was cut when the team made a series of roster moves before the season.
Philadelphia's Web site noted that "Jordan is expected to contribute to the Eagles on special teams and as a reserve linebacker. He had an outstanding summer in the preseason and has a chance to be active Sunday (Nov. 4) night against the (Dallas) Cowboys" in Philadelphia's next game.
Jordan last season led JMU with 140 tackles, including 69 solo stops, 17 tackles for loss and 5.5 quarterback sacks. He was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defender in the Football Championship Subdivision, and he received first-team All-America recognition from the American Football coaches Association, the Walter Camp Foundation, and The Sports Network. He was second-team All-America by Associated Press. He was named Virginia Division I defensive player of the year by the state's sports information directors association.
Jordan is a Harrisonburg native and a graduate of Harrisonburg High School.
