HANOVER, N.H., Nov. 17, 2007 ? Four James Madison players scored during 13-4 scoring burst to close the opening half, and the Dukes went on to beat Dartmouth 72-57 in men's non-conference basketball Saturday.
Junior forward Kyle Swanston (Spring Hill, Fla./Hernando) put JMU in front to stay, 27-25, with a three-point field goal with 5:58 left in the first half, and the Dukes limited the host Big Green to four points over the final six minutes of the opening period.
The victory was JMU's second-straight of the season and gave the Dukes a 2-0 start for the first time since 2004-05. Dartmouth, which won 74-70 last season at the JMU Convocation Center, fell to 1-2.
After Swanston put JMU in front to stay with a three-pointer for the second-straight game, the Dukes got two free throws from junior guard Abdulai Jalloh (District Heights, Md./National Christian Academy) for a 29-25 lead with 4:05 left in the half and two free throws from senior forward Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) for a 31-25 edge at 3:51.
Carter added a field goal at 2:06 and sophomore forward Dazzmond Thornton (Denver, Colo./East) had field goals at the 1:09 and 0:41 marks for a 37-29 JMU advantage at halftime.
JMU's lead reached 55-35 on a Carter three-pointer with 12:13 left in the game, and Dartmouth got no closer than 13 points (60-47 with 7:22 left) the rest of the way.
The Dukes hit on seven of eight free throws after Dartmouth got to within 13 points and connected on 23 of 28 shots from the foul line overall (82.1 percent). J
