The Dukes broke a 44-44 tie on junior forward Kyle Swanston's (Spring Hill, Fla./Hernando) three-point field goal with 13:53 left in the game and led the rest of the way in recording their fourth victory in five games this season and their second road win.
Swanston's three-pointer started an 11-2 scoring run that gave JMU a 55-46 advantage with 10:18 left, and the Dukes kept at least a five-point margin thereafter. Sophomore forward Dazzmond Thornton (Denver, Colo./East) had five points during the run, including a three-point play that gave JMU its nine-point lead.
Eastern Kentucky, which won 70-66 at JMU and competed in the NCAA Tournament during a 21-12 season a year ago, got to within 68-63 with 2:05 to play, but the Dukes got a field goal from senior forward Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) at 1:36 and two Carter free throws at 1:21 after he rebounded a Colonel miss.
Carter's two free throws were part of a 10-of-12 JMU effort from the foul line during the final 1:21 and an overall 20-of-23 second-half performance on free throws for the Dukes. JMU hit on 27 of 34 free throws for the game (79.4 percent).
Carter led the Dukes with 17 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season. Junior guard Abdulai Jalloh (District Heights, Md./National Christian Academy) and junior forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) each had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Dukes, and Swanston had 12 points and freshman guard Heiden Ratner (Las Vegas, Nev./Silverado) 11.
