KANNAPOLIS, N.C., March 2, 2007 ? Charlotte scored four runs each in the first, second, and fourth innings and went on to defeat James Madison University 16-7 in the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series on Friday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Charlotte improved to 8-3 overall while JMU fell to 1-5. The teams combined for 23 runs and 29 hits while leaving a combined 22 runners on base.
Senior Adam Mills (Big Pool, Md./Clear Spring) improved to 4-0 on the season with the win for the 49ers. He had a streak of 20 scoreless innings pitched snapped in the first inning, but went on to throw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Redshirt sophomore
Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) surrendered 12 runs on 14 hits over the first 3 2/3 innings to drop to 0-2 on the season. After Houck gave up most of the damage, three freshmen for the Dukes combined to allow four runs over the final 4 1/3 innings on just four hits.
Much of the offensive damage for the 49ers came from the last five spots in the batting order, which went a combined 13-for-22 with 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored. Junior Brad McElroy (St. Thomas, Ont./Kellogg C.C.) went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Kris Rochelle (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) went 3-for-3 with a double while scoring twice and driving in four. Short stop Shayne Moody (Midland, Texas/Brookhaven College) and designated hitter Chris Taylor (Mt. Pleasant, N.C./Mt. Pleasant) each went 2-for-5 while driving in two.
Redshirt freshman
Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) led the way for the Dukes, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior

Brett Garner (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) had two hits apiece.
For the fifth time in six games, the Dukes scored first, plating one run in the first inning. Freshman
Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) led off the game by reaching on an error by Moody. After two straight fly-ball outs, Caseres sent a bouncing ball through the hole on the right side to move Fabiaschi to third. He came around to score on a line drive single up the middle by Garner. The run ended a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings thrown by Mills.
The JMU lead did not last long as Charlotte sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and third, Taylor flung his bat at an outside pitch and found the gap on the right side of the infield for a perfect hit-and-run play for the first run. McElroy followed with a double over the head of Moses in left field for the second run. Then with runners on second and third, Alex Burt (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) laced an RBI single through the left side to score two more for the 49ers.
The 49ers made it two in a row, plating four runs and batting around in the second. A bloop single to right field by Taylor scored the first run of the inning. Burt collected an RBI single to left and Rochelle followed with a two-run single to left.
JMU came back with its second unearned run of the game in the third. Fabiaschi again reached on an error, this time an errant throw by third baseman Aaron Bray (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) that allowed him to advance to second. Junior
Kellen Kulbacki (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey) walked and after a fly ball by Stoneburner, Caseres lined a single to centerfield to score Fabiaschi. A double steal and a walk set up bases loaded with one down, but Mills came back to strike out senior
Mitchell Moses (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and sophomore
Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) back-to-back to end the inning.
Rochelle made it four RBIs for the day in the bottom of the fourth when
