ARLINGTON, Va., April 11, 2007 ? James Madison University scored in all but one inning and set season highs for runs and margin of victory with a 21-4 non-conference baseball victory over George Washington University on Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
JMU improved to 11-23 overall while GWU dropped to 11-22. The 21 runs marked the first time surpassing 20 runs since a 24-9 win over Towson on May 7, 2006. It was the most runs scored this season, breaking the previous high of 13 against Maryland. The 17-run margin of victory was the largest since a 35-2 win over Wagner on March 4, 2006.
Junior
Kellen Kulbacki (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey) reached base safely in six of seven at bats, going 4-for-5 with a three-run home run, two doubles, two walks, five RBIs, and four runs scored. The home run was his 12
th of the season and increased his school career record to 44. The nine total bases vaulted him from eighth to sixth all-time with 401 career total bases. The three extra-base hits moved him within two of the JMU career record of 97.
Redshirt sophomore
Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) picked up his first win of the season after limiting the Colonials to no runs and three hits in five innings with three strikeouts.
Freshman
Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) reached base five times with three hits and two walks. He added two steals and scored three runs. Junior
Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had three hits, scored twice, and tied the school record for steals in a game with four. No player had more than two in a game entering the day for a JMU team that ranked 19
th nationally in stolen bases entering the week.
In addition to Kulbacki, four other players drove in multiple RBIs. Redshirt sophomore
Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) drove in four runs on two hits with two runs scored. Freshman
Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) drove in three and scored twice with a pair of hits. Redshirt freshman
Bryan Lescanec (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for his first collegiate base hit and RBI. Senior
Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) had a pair of sacrifice flies, walked three times, and scored twice.
The Dukes stole a season-high seven bases as a team, all from the bottom three spots in the batting order. JMU also benefited from 14 walks issued by GWU pitchers, including 12 in the first six innings.
Sophomore Jimmy Duggan (Jefferson, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) took the loss, laboring through 4 2/3 innings with seven runs allowed, four earned, on six hits and eight walks. He threw 124 pitches in just short of five innings. Eleven of the 21 runs were unearned as GW had five errors.
Freshman Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul Schreiber) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Colonials. Senior Michael Parker (Newton, Mass./Newton South) had two hits and an RBI. Freshman Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) had two hits and scored a run.
The Dukes put a three spot on the board in the first inning with the aid of a pair of Colonials' fielding errors. Stoneburner reached on an error to start the inning, and Kulbacki lined a double to right field. Redshirt freshman
Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) walked to load the bases with no out. After a strikeout, Bujakowski hit a two-run single to right for the first JMU runs. An RBI groundout by Browning brought in the third run.
JMU put up another run in the second after Lake singled, stole second, and stole third. He came in to score after Stoneburner appeared to be caught in a pickoff rundown at first. Lake broke for home and drew the throw, but scored safely when the throw got away
