HARRISONBURG, Va., June 15, 2007 ? Senior left-handed pitcher Jacob Cook (Richmond, Va./Lee-Davis) signed a free agent contract Friday to join the Toronto Blue Jays organization, while incoming freshman J.C. Menna (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
“This is what I've wanted to do my whole life,” Cook said of the chance to play professionally. “I'm just glad to finally have the opportunity.”
Cook will fly to Dunedin, Fla. on Sunday where he will join the rookie league affiliate in the Gulf Coast League for Tuesday's season opener. The Gulf Coast Blue Jays are a first-year franchise, as Toronto ended its previous relationship with Pulaski of the Appalachian League.
JMU's all-time appearances record holder with 92, Cook is also second with 280 career innings with the Dukes and third with 240 strikeouts. As a senior, he compiled a 6-5 record with a 4.98 earned run average while splitting time as a starter and reliever. He came on strong as a starter at the end of the season, pitching 8 1/3 innings in a 1-0 shutout at Georgia State and going the distance in a 6-2 win over Towson.
Menna recently wrapped up his scholastic career at Red Bank Catholic, where he played as an infielder and a pitcher. One of five recruits announced by the Dukes in the fall, he was selected by the Pirates in the 39th round of the draft. Menna will have until August 15 to decide if he will sign with the Pirates.
JMU had a total of three players drafted last Thursday and Friday, with Menna joining supplemental round pick Kellen Kulbacki (Palmyra, Pa./Hershey), who was selected 40th overall by the San Diego Padres, and Texas Rangers' ninth-round draftee Davis Stoneburner (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin).
