HUNTINGTON, West Va., Sept. 12, 2007 -- After shooting a final-round 316, the JMU women's golf team finished 20 strokes ahead of host school Marshall to win the Lady Herd Classic held in Huntington, W. Va. Tuesday.
Sophomore Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass/Suffield Academy) and freshman Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) each shot three-round totals of 233 and finished tied for second overall. They finished just two strokes behind individual tournament champion Larie Lynch of Marshall. Chamberlain had rounds of 83, 74 and 76 and Mesa rounds of 77, 74, and 82.
The Dukes took control of the tournament right from the beginning, shooting a first-day 310 and leading by 11 strokes after the first day. Their second-round 313 and final-round 316 gave them the three lowest scores for the tournament.
Freshman Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) finished tied for seventh with a three-round total of 238. She shot individual rounds of 77, 81 and 80. Freshman Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) finished tied for 10th after a three-round total of 242 (79, 84, 79), and senior Ashley Mantha (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished in 15th with a three-round total of 245 (77, 87, 81).
Sophomore Meagan Hayes (Milwaukee, Wisc./DSHA) participated in the event independent of the team score and finished tied for 35th after compiling a three-round score of 273. She shot rounds of 88, 92 and 93.
Finishing behind the Dukes was host school Marshall (959), Old Dominion (963), Alabama-Birmingham (983), Austin Peay (985), Dartmouth (1022), Marshall B (1070), and Ohio Valley (1179).
