Dukes Close Out Nittany Lion Invitational with Top Five Finish

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – James Madison opened the 2026-27 women's golf season with a top-five finish on Tuesday afternoon, taking home fifth place at the Nittany Lion Invitational, held at the par-72, 6,363-yard Penn State Blue Course.
The Dukes started quickly, carding rounds of 285 (-3) and 281 (-7) on a 36-hole opening day, with their second-round score marking the third-lowest single-round score to par in program history, while the 36-hole total of 566 (-10) set a new program record for 36-hole score to par.
Despite closing with an 8-over 296 on a challenging final day to wrap up the week at in fifth among 18 teams, the Dukes' 54-hole score (862, -2) was just the third time ever that a JMU squad finished 54 holes under par as a team.
Kate Sowers (71-70-73), in her first collegiate tournament, and Grace Petzold (71-69-74) led the way for JMU on the weekend, tying for 12th place among 90 competitors with matching totals of 2-under 214.
Emerson Elm (73-71-74) tied for 29th at 2-over 218 and Klára Sionková (70-71-78) was just one stroke back in a tie for 34th, while Bella Flores (75-77-75) closed out the team scoring in 62nd place.
Playing in the Happy Valley Individual on the White Course at Penn State (par-72, 6,164 yards), Georgia Blount carded rounds of 71 (-1) and 70 (-2) to take home third place in the individual competition.
The Dukes will be back in action next week, when they travel to Greenville Country Club on Sept. 14-15 to take part in the Pirate Collegiate Classic, hosted by East Carolina.
