HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 20, 2008 -? Sophomore guard Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) scored all six of her team's overtime points to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 61-60 win over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Rams improved their CAA record to 4-1 and 14-2 overall, while the Dukes slipped to 3-2 in conference play and 10-6 overall.
Waller hit a free throw with 1.9 seconds remaining to give VCU a victory that snapped JMU's 20-game home winning streak against conference opponents. The Rams handed the Dukes their first loss at home to a league opponent since Delaware beat JMU 59-52 on March 3, 2005.
Waller scored a team-high 20 points and opened overtime with a three-pointer at 4:45. She hit three of four foul shots in overtime, including two free throws at 2:43 that put VCU up 60-57.
The Dukes tied the game at 60 after a foul shot by senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) at 1:31 followed by a short jumper by Young with 49.2 seconds left.
On VCU's next possession, junior forward Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria/Daytona Beach CC) missed a mid-range jumper and JMU rebounded. However, the Dukes lost the ball out of bounds with 7.6 seconds remaining.
A foul was called on JMU junior forward Kisha Stokes (New York, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) with 1.9 seconds left, sending Waller to the foul line with VCU in the double bonus. She missed the first but made the second free throw to win the game.
The teams exchanged leads 17 times throughout the game and tied a total of 12 times.
The biggest lead by either team was six points.
VCU's six-point advantage was 16-10 with 8:57 left in the first half. However, the Rams followed that by going 1-for-10 from the field and 5-for-9 at the line in the remainder of the period.
The Dukes outscored VCU 15-7 in that nine-minute stretch to take a 25-23 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Rams took advantage of two JMU turnovers in the opening minute. Bachvarova hit a three-pointer and then a baseline jumper to put VCU up 28-25 at 18:59.
The Rams were up 31-29 when the Dukes scored eight straight points to take their biggest lead of the game, 37-31, at 15:54.
