FAIRFAX, Va., Oct. 11, 2008 ? George Mason scored twice in the final six minutes to beat James Madison 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium.
Mason sophomore Irvin Martinez netted the game-winning goal on a free kick in the 88th minute to lift the Patriots (6-4-1, 2-2-0 CAA) to the win over the Dukes (5-5-2, 2-3-0 CAA).
Martinez lofted his shot over a wall of Dukes' defenders and off the tip of the left hand of redshirt freshman goalkeeper Justin Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton). The winning score came with 2:41 remaining.
JMU had taken a 1-0 lead at 71:29 on a shot from sophomore CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) from the left side of the box. Senior Nick Zimmerman (Tampa Bay, Fla./Wharton) was credited with the assist on the play.
The Patriots tied the game at 84:08. Martinez dribbled the ball up the middle before passing off to senior Lucas Pardew, who was streaking down the right side of the field. Parden then crossed the ball to sophomore Parker Walton, who headed the ball into the net.
Mason held a 17-12 advantage on shots. Epperson made four saves, and Mason goalkeeper Sean Kelley finished with two saves.
