PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 17, 2008 -? Drexel sophomore Gabriela Marginean (Cluj-Napoca, Romania/Mt. de Chantal Academy) and freshman Jasmina Rosseel (Leper, Belgium/Sint-Theresia Instituut) combined for 44 points to lead the Dragons to a 74-67 win over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The win stopped a seven-game JMU winning streak as Drexel improved to 14-10 overall and 9-4 in league play. The Dukes are 17-7 overall and 10-3 in the CAA.
Marginean scored 16 of her game-high 26 points in the second half and was four-for-four at the foul line in the final 15 seconds. Rosseel, who finished with 18 points, had 13 second-half points. That included eight points in a span of 1:26 that put her team ahead by six, 70-64, with 48 seconds to play.
JMU was led by senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney), who scored 23 points and tied her career high with 20 rebounds. She also became only the second player in school history to pass 1,000 rebounds. She did that with her second rebound of the game at 18:48. She now has 1,018 career boards.
Drexel was leading by seven, 55-48, with 5:29 to play, but the Dukes trimmed the margin to one, 59-58, with 3:20 left. In a 10-4 scoring run, freshman guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) hit two three-pointers, Young scored on a conventional three-point play, and redshirt senior forward Jennifer Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King) hit a free throw.
But the Dragons outscored JMU 15-9 in the final three minutes. Ahead by two, 62-60, at 2:26, Rosseel banked in a 10-foot jumper at 2:14 and drained a long three-pointer at 1:39. Next she made a steal, drove down court for a layup and was fouled, and that three-point play put Drexel up 70-64 with 47.5 seconds on the clock. Her eight-point effort offset a Brown free throw and an Evans three-pointer on JMU's end of the court.
Another Evans trey with 38.4 seconds left closed the gap to 70-67. However, the Dukes were forced to foul.<>
