DUKES WRAP UP TOURNAMENT WITH LOSS TO UMBC

GREENSBORO, N.C., Feb. 17, 2008 ? Two errors and a mis-played line drive led to the JMU women's softball team dropping a 4-3 decision to Maryland, Baltimore County Sunday. The loss drops the Dukes to 2-2 on the season.
After failing to capitalize on some earlier opportunities, Madison broke through and opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs off starting pitcher Amanda Fefel.
Junior pitcher Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second. Junior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) drove her home with an RBI double. Sophomore designated hitter Shannon Moxey (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) followed that up with an RBI double of her own.
Moxey went 2-for-4 on the day with two doubles and an RBI. Kirk went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman shortstop Melissa Hill (Santee, Cal./Westhills) would pinch run for Moxey and scored on Wernsing RBI single. Wernsing went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI.
The Dukes could not hold onto the lead however, giving up three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, on two defensive miscues.
After Dana Shepherd led off the innings with a ground out, senior first baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Cal./Upland) dropped a throw, allowing catcher Kali Shirk to reach base. Clohan walked than next batter before giving up an RBI single to Ashley Gray. Gray would be thrown out at second on the play.
Clohan would follow that with another walk and than a two RBI double when left fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) failed to make a diving catch.
