HARRISONBURG, Va., March 1, 2008 ? Senior forward Terrance Carter (District Heights, Md./Largo) had six points during a 13-5 James Madison scoring run to close the game to lead the Dukes to a 70-60 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball win over Georgia State at the JMU Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.
Georgia State cut a 10-point, second-half JMU lead to 57-55 before JMU controlled the final three minutes.
Junior guard Abdulai Jalloh (District Heights, Md./National Christian Academy) started the late JMU burst with a three-point field goal for a 60-55 Dukes lead with 2:50 remaining, and Carter scored on a driving layup with 1:42 to play for a 62-55 JMU advantage. The Dukes then hit on eight straight free throws during the final 1:24 to seal the victory.
JMU improved to 13-16 overall and 5-13 in the CAA with the victory in its final regular-season game. Georgia State fell to 9-20 overall and to 5-13 in the conference.
Drexel also finished the CAA race with a 5-13 record and receives the No. 10 seeding for the next weekend's (March 7-10) league tournament through the conference's tie-breaking procedure. JMU will be seeded 11th and Georgia State 12th. In play between the three tied teams, Drexel this season was 2-1, JMU 1-1 and Georgia State 1-2.
JMU will begin CAA Tournament in an 8:30 p.m. first-round game Friday against Northeastern. Georgia State will play in the 2:30 p.m. first-round game against either Old Dominion or William & Mary.
