PANTHERSVILLE, Ga., March 7, 2008 ? James Madison University jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and put the game away with nine runs in the ninth for a 16-5 win at Georgia State University in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game Friday evening at The Field at Panthersville.
JMU improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. GSU dropped to 9-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. The Dukes scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, averaging over 12 runs per game during that span. The nine-run ninth was also JMU's second nine-run inning in the last four games. The Dukes outhit the Panthers 18-6 with all of GSU's hits being singles.
The Dukes were led offensively by the trio of redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional), and junior Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield). Sellers homered for the third straight game while matching career highs of three runs, three hits, and three RBIs. Caseres set a career high with five RBIs on a two-run home run and a three-run double. Townsend reached a career best with four hits in four at bats and matched his best run total with three and his career-best hitting streak at seven.
In addition for JMU, redshirt senior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) and junior Brett Garner (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) each had two hits, a walk, a run, and an RBI. Sophomore Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) singled in his only official at bat with three walks, a run,and an RBI.
Redshirt junior Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) picked up his first victory on the mound, allowing three runs on just three hits in six innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. Freshman John Mincone (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) earned his first career save, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in the final three innings.
Junior Chase Childers (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb Christian) was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk as the only Panther with multiple hits. J
