CHAPEL HILL, N.C., March 8, 2008 ? Junior right-hander Meredith Felts struck out a school record 14 batters and in the process became JMU's all-time strikeout leader in a 3-0 win over Princeton Saturday.
The Dukes (8-8) went 1-1 on the day as earlier in the day they fell 7-5 to USC Upstate (11-3).
Felts set a new single-game mark for strikeouts, breaking the record of 13 she shared with former Duke Briana Carerra (2003-06). She also entered the game with 284 career strikeouts, five shy of Carerra's career mark of 289. She finished the day with 298 strikeouts.
Felts picked up the complete-game shutout and improved to 4-4 this season. The North Carolina native needed just 90 pitches, 67 of them strikes, to get the win. She allowed two hits and walked none.
Junior catcher Julia Dominguez provided Madison with the offense it needed, hitting her second home run of the season, the 19th of her career, to give the Dukes a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Dominguez finished the day 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Freshman third baseman Lauren Robison went 1-for-3 with a single, picking up the first hit of her career.
The Dukes got an insurance run in the top of the fifth on sophomore centerfielder Courtney Simons RBI single to right field.
In the first game of the day, the Dukes took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning but gave up a grand-slam home run with one out to designated player Venesa Flores. USC Upstate beat out two infield singles to set up the inning and would score five runs in the inning to win the game 7-5.
JMU got a runner to second base in the bottom half of the inning but had two batters strike out to end the game.
