HARRISONBURG, Va., April 19, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team moved into fourth place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a pair of wins over UNC Wilmington Saturday. The Dukes took game one from the Seahawks 4-2 and followed that up with a 9-1, six-inning win in game two. Sunday's series finale at the JMU Softball Complex has been moved up an hour to an 11 a.m. start.
Madison improved to 23-20 with the sweep and 7-6 in the CAA. The Seahawks dropped to 12-26-1 overall and 3-11 in conference play. JMU moved up from fifth to fourth in the CAA after Drexel dropped a pair of conference games at Hofstra Saturday.
In game two, Madison got three RBIs each from junior catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) and sophomore designated player Lauren Mernin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and junior right-hander Meredith Felts scattered four hits over six-innings of work for the 9-1 win.
Felts picked up her sixth complete game and team-leading 10th win of the season. She allowed one run, walked one and struck out five in six innings of work.
The Dukes opened the scoring in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring four runs off UNCW starter Amanda Aditays. Dominguez picked up a one-out walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone). Dyson reached safely and both runners advanced a base on a throwing error. Mernin would follow with her first RBI of the day as she singled up the middle to plate Dominguez. After another sacrifice bunt that put runners on second and third with two outs, sophomore right fielder Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va/Mills Godwin) singled up the middle to score Dyson and Mernin.
JMU would add one more run in the inning as sophomore center fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run)
