SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., April 2, 2008 ? The James Madison women's softball team split a pair of games with Liberty University in non-conference softball action Wednesday at the Liberty Softball Field.
The Dukes picked up their first win in six attempts in Lynchburg and improved to 17-17 on the season.
Madison was led in game two by freshman catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) who collected two hits, including her first career home run to lead JMU to the win.
The Flames took the early lead, scoring a single run in the first. Second baseman Cassie Hendrix led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on designated player Ashley Williams' double to center.
JMU responded with two runs of their own in the third. Senior first baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) led off with a single to left and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by the left fielder. LU starter Tiffani Smith got the next batter to strikeout but surrendered a two-run home run to left by Spitzer. Spitzer worked the count full before taking the next Smith offering deep over the left-field fence for the home run.
Liberty continued the seesaw battle in the bottom of the fourth scoring a run to tie the game at two. LU catcher Keely McMillion led off the inning with an infield single to the shortstop. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to second. Shortstop Leah Cossentino came through for the Flames, lacing a 3-2 pitch up the middle for the RBI.
