WOMEN'S LACROSSE HOLDS OFF DREXEL FOR 10-9 VICTORY

HARRISONBURG, Va., April 20, 2008 -- James Madison goalkeepers combined for 14 saves as the Dukes held off Drexel for a 10-9 win in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.
JMU improved to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in CAA play. Drexel's record is 10-6 overall and 2-5 against league opponents.
Drexel out-shot the Dukes 30-23, but JMU starting senior goalkeeper Kelly Wetzel (Catonsville, Md./Mount De Sales) made 12 saves in 47:37, and sophomore goalie Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) stopped two shots in the final 12:23. Three Drexel goaltenders combined for eight saves.
JMU senior Annie Wagner (Annapolis, Md./St. Paul's) scored four times and redshirt sophomore Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) netted two goals. Four other Dukes added one goal apiece.
Drexel got three goals each from senior Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and senior Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), and three players contributed one goal each.
The game was tight for the first 35 minutes of play, with the match tied four times and neither team ever leading by more than one goal. Then the Dukes, holding a slim 6-5 advantage, exploded for four goals in less than five minutes to build a 10-5 lead with 19:30 to play.
The run started when senior Natasha Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) fed a pass to senior Emily Haller (Fallston, Md./John Carroll), who sent a shot to the lower right corner of the net at 23:41.
A pass from senior Lucy Lynch (London, England/Caterham) set up senior Julie Stone (Annandale, Va./Annandale) for the Dukes' next goal. That score, at 21:18, pushed the JMU lead to 8-5.
