FAIRFAX, Va., April 27, 2008 ? The James Madison softball team shutout George Mason 3-0 on Sunday to secure a three-game sweep of the Patriots at the GMU Softball Complex in Fairfax, Va.
The Dukes improved to 27-20 overall and 11-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win while Mason dropped to 19-29 overall and 6-11 in conference. The JMU sweep combined with Towson dropping two games to Drexel on Saturday moved Madison into third place in the CAA.
Junior right-hander Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) pitched her second shutout in as many days and senior first baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) collected four hits to extend the Dukes winning streak to a season-long eight games.
After trading scoreless frames with the Patriots in the first two innings, the Dukes broke through in the top of third inning. Sophomore center fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) started things off with a one-out single. After a fielder's choice, senior first baseman Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) singled to put a runner in scoring position. The Dukes then capitalized on a muffed catch by Mason that allowed junior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County) to score from second.
Felts picked up her eighth complete game and tied the single-season school record with her fifth shutout. She game up seven hits and three walks while striking out nine. In three games this weekend the junior from Greenville, N.C. went 2-0 with a save. She pitched 15 innings, giving up 10 hits, five walks, no runs and striking out 18.
The Dukes added a pair of insurance in the top of the fifth. Simons again got things started, this time with a walk, before Kirk replaced her at first on a fielder's choice. Chav
