BROOKLINE, Mass., May 16, 2008 ? James Madison University broke out of a 5-4 deficit with six unanswered runs and clinched second place in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 10-6 win over Northeastern University on Friday afternoon at Friedman Baseball Diamond.
JMU improved to 33-17 overall and 19-9 in the CAA while NU dropped to 25-25-1 overall and 12-16-1 in conference. The win snapped a four-game losing streak against the Huskies.
As the two seed, the Dukes will open the CAA Tournament on Wednesday in the first game at noon against Old Dominion, which clinched the five seed with a 9-3 win over UNC Wilmington on Friday night.
Redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) hit a three-run home run and an RBI triple to match his career high with four RBIs. He climbed into ninth in season home runs with his 15th and also moved into ninth with 149 season total bases.
Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) doubled, homered, drove in two, and scored three times. He moved into a tie for third in season home runs with his 19th and also jumped into a tie for 10th in season total bases, one behind Sellers with 148. Caseres is just four extra-base hits shy of tying Kellen Kulbacki's JMU record of 43.
Redshirt junior Kurt Houck (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) earned the victory with 3 1/3 innings of relief allowing one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts. He improved to 6-2 to give the Dukes four pitchers with six wins on the season.
Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts in the final three innings for his fifth save, moving into a tie for sixth for saves in a season.
