HARRISONBURG, Va., May 19, 2008 -- It's official. Former James Madison basketball player Tamera Young is on the 13-member roster of the WNBA Atlanta Dream.
Young, a first-round draft pick last month, is one of two rookies on the expansion team's roster. Guard Chioma Nnamaka from Georgia Tech is the other first-year player.
”We are thrilled for Tamera and the opportunity that she has to compete in the WNBA," said JMU head coach Kenny Brooks. "It has been a dream of hers for a long time, and she has worked hard to achieve this goal. This says a lot about her as a player, but it also says a lot about our program. This will help attract future Dukes knowing that they can reach their dreams of playing at the highest level from JMU.”
Young played in both of Atlanta's preseason games but did not play in the regular-season opener at Connecticut on Saturday.
The former Dukes' guard had team highs of 15 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench in an 86-80 home preseason loss to Los Angeles on May 3. She contributed five points and a team-high six rebounds in a 97-84 exhibition loss at Phoenix on May 11.
Atlanta will play its first home game of the regular season against Detroit on May 23 and will host Los Angeles on May 25 before traveling to Washington, D.C., to face the Mystics on May 27.
