HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 23, 2009 - James Madison senior defensive end Arthur Moats (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) was named conference defensive player of the year and Dukes' redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Thorpe (Richmond, Va./Varina) league rookie of the year in the Colonial Athletic Association Monday.
CAA coaches voted for the conference awards that also included JMU players being named to 11 positions on the all-league first, second and third teams.
Moats during the 2009 season led JMU in tackles with 90. He tied for the CAA lead in quarterback sacks with 11 and is the national Football Championship Subdivision leader in tackles for loss with an average of 2.14 per game.
Thorpe this season ran for a team-leading 654 yards and five touchdowns, threw for 1,260 yards and six scores and compiled 1,914 yards of total offense.
Moats recognition was JMU's sixth league defensive player of the year honor during Coach Mickey Matthews' 11 seasons with the Dukes. Chris Morant (1998-2000) won the award in 1999; Derrick Lloyd (1999-2001) was the co-recipient in 2001; Tony LeZotte (2004-07) was honored in 2005 and 2007; and Akeem Jordan (2004-07) was the 2007 winner.
The CAA's other top individual awards went to Villanova wide receiver Matt Szczur as offensive player of the year and special teams player of the year, Villanova's Andy Talley as league coach of the year, and William & Mary defensive back B.W. Webb as conference defensive rookie of the year.
JMU's first-team all-league honorees included Moats on the defensive line and senior offensive guard Dorian Brooks (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) on the offensive line.
Dukes named to the second all-league teams included senior Scotty McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) as a cornerback, kickoff returner and punt returner, and senior defensive tackle Sam Daniels (Portsmouth, Va./Woodrow Wilson) on the defensive line.
Third-team selections from JMU included senior wide receiver Rockeed McCarter (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic), senior tight end Mike Caussin (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), junior offensive tackle Theo Sherman (Danville, Va./Chatham), junior defensive tackle Ronnell Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and sophomore linebacker Pat Williams (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial).
Moats in 2009 set JMU's season record of 23.5 tackles for loss, and his 11 sacks match the No. 4 season figure in team history. He completed his career with 29 sacks, JMU's second-best career mark. He was a third-team All-CAA honoree in 2008.
The Buchanan Award candidate as the top defensive player in the FCS, Moats also is the national tackles leader among defensive linemen.
Thorpe shared JMU's quarterback duties early during the season before assuming a full-time role when junior Drew Dudzik (Clifton, Va./Centreville) left the team's fifth game with a foot injury. Thorpe's 1,914 yards of total offense are a JMU freshman season record, and his 1,260 passing yards are JMU's No. 2 freshman season mark. Thorpe was named the CAA rookie of the week after throwing to 259 yards and three touchdowns Saturday (Nov. 21) in JMU's 43-12 win over Towson. He won or shared a weekly league player award four times during the 2009 season.
