HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 14, 2009 -- James Madison women's basketball coach Kenny Brooks has announced the signing of two players to scholarships during the NCAA's fall signing period.
The 2010 recruiting class includes the following:
Kirby Burkholder, a 5'11" guard/forward from Bridgewater, Va. (Turner Ashby High School). Burkholder earned all-state second team honors as a junior and all-state honorable mention as a sophomore. She has won all-region honors the last three seasons, including first-team all-region recognition as a sophomore and junior and second-team honors as a freshman. Burkholder is a three-time first-team all-district choice and was voted district Player of the Year as a sophomore. She was selected Harrisonburg Daily News-Record Player of the Year following her junior season, when the Knights were group AA state runners-up. Entering her senior season Burkholder had career totals of 1,242 points and a school-record 725 rebounds.
Debbie Smith, a 5'10" guard from Hampton, Va. (Hampton High School; AAU: Boo Williams Elite). Smith is a McDonald's All-America nominee and was an All-Peninsula District second team selection in 2009 after earning district honorable mention in 2008. She played at Charles City High School as a freshman in 2006-07, when she led her team to its first regional tournament and earned Tri-Rivers District second team honors. That year she was the top scorer and rebounder in Region A, averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds a game. Smith passed the 1,200-point career scoring mark in early December and was averaging 27.7 points after her first three games.
"I am extremely excited about the addition of Kirby Burkholder and Debbie Smith to our JMU family," said coach Brooks. "Both of these young ladies will make key contributions to our program and will represent JMU in a very positive manner."
