PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Feb. 8, 2009 ? The James Madison softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to UC Davis to wrap up the Cathedral City Kickoff, held this weekend in Palm Springs, Calif.
Madison dropped to 1-3 with the loss while the Aggies improved to 3-0.
UC Davis capitalized on some sloppy JMU play in the top of the third, scoring four runs on two Duke errors. The inning started with a walk to third baseman Jessica Gonzalez followed by a fielder's choice by second baseman Julie Strauder. Cal. Davis center fielder Belinda Paine then beat out a bunt single and advanced around to third base on a throwing error that also plated Strauder.
Strauder finished the game 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI.
Catcher Deanna Menapace walked to put runners on the corners for Davis. During the ensuing at bat Menapace stole second and advanced to third on another Dukes' throwing error this time scoring Paine.
A controversial call lead to the Aggies' third run of the game when designated player Rachel Miller grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Menapace. It appeared senior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing's (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) throw beat the runner to the plate but the umpire ruled Menapace got in under the tag.
First baseman Erin Emde drove in the final Cal. Davis run of the inning, singling to right field to plate pinch runner Michelle Espirtu.
