HARRISONBURG, Va., March 20, 2009 ? Sophomore right-hander Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) pitched 7 2/3 innings to lead James Madison past Northeastern 7-2 in the opener of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series on Friday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.

JMU improved to 13-8 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. NU dropped to 9-6 for the season and 0-1 in the league. The Dukes won for the third time in the last four games in the series.

Phelps improved to 4-0 on the season and 12-0 in his career, the best winning percentage in program history for a pitcher with at least 10 career decisions. He struck out six and allowed six hits. Phelps cruised through the first seven innings, entering the eighth with a shutout intact and just two hits allowed before the Huskies finally put two runs on the board on four hits.

Sophomore Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) entered with a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth and struck out consecutive batters to end the inning. He went on to earn his third save with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Junior center fielder Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) returned from injury to go 3-for-4 with a run scored. Redshirt junior designated hitter Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) smacked his CAA-leading eighth home run. Junior left fielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) had two doubles while sophomore third baseman McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior second baseman Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) hit a solo homer.

Ryan Quigley took the loss for the Huskies after allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two. Matt Miller was 2-for-4 at the plate for NU with an RBI.
