HARRISONBURG, Va., Mar. 8, 2009 ? The James Madison softball team scored in six different innings and received solid pitching as it swept a doubleheader over Rider 4-0 and 10-2. The Dukes improved to 4-0 at the JMU Softball Complex after sweeping a doubleheader over Lafayette yesterday.
Madison improved to 14-5 on the season and ran its winning streak four games. The Broncs dropped to 0-6 with the losses.
In game two, JMU scored multiple runs in three different innings including five in the bottom half of the six to eight-run rule Rider 10-2.
The Dukes put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together five hits and two hit by pitches to score five runs. Sophomore catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) led off the inning with mammoth home run deep over the center field fence to give Madison a 6-2 lead. Sophomore center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) and senior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) were each hit by a pitch to chase left-hander Kelsey Krisch from the game. Junior pinch hitter Kendra Johnson (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) loaded the bases with a fielder's choice. The Dukes took a 7-2 lead on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin). After Wernsing stole third, junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va/Deep Run) drove in her third RBI of the day with a groundout.
Simons went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Johnson scored on a wild pitch to run the score to 9-2. JMU reloaded the bases after getting three straight singles by sophomore pinch hitter Lauren Robison (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert), freshman pinch hitter Gillian Giarrizzo (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) and freshman shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers). Freshman pincher hitter Caitlen Manning (Prince George, Va./Prince George) ended the game with a single to left field to plate Robison.
