DELAND, Fla., March 8, 2009 ? James Madison jumped out to a 9-1 lead and went on to a 17-8 victory over Stetson in the baseball series finale on Sunday afternoon at Melching Field.

JMU improved to 8-5 overall and won for the eighth time in its last 10 games after taking three of four games in the series. SU dropped to 3-10.

The Dukes had season highs for runs, hits (19), home runs (3), and total bases (33). JMU had a pair of four-run innings in the first and third to build the big 9-1 lead then added three runs each in the seventh and ninth while scoring in seven of nine innings overall.

Redshirt sophomore first baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored on a single, double, walk, and a home run. Sophomore short stop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) was also 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, both on sacrifice flies.

Sophomore third baseman McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) and redshirt junior leftfielder Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) each had two hits with a home run. It was the fifth of the season for Townsend. Junior second baseman Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and two RBIs.

For the second straight day, a sophomore lefthander earned his first career victory. This time it was Alex Valadja (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) going 5 2/3 innings with five runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Starter Andy Mauldin took the loss for the Hatters after allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings.

Stetson scored each of its first four runs on solo home runs and had 12 hits in the loss. Jeremy Cruz was 3-for-4 with two RBIs on solo homers. Nick
