HARRISONBURG, Va., March 10, 2009 ? Sophomore shortstop David Herbek's (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) two-run single in the ninth was the walk-off game winner as James Madison topped Youngstown State 6-5 in the first game of a two-game midweek series on Tuesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU improved to 9-5 overall, winning for the ninth time in 11 games. YSU fell to 2-8 with its fifth loss in a row.
The Dukes led 4-3 heading into the ninth inning, but the Penguins rallied for two runs in the top of the inning to take the lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Dukes loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter. Herbek got ahead in the count 2-1 and pulled a sharp grounder inside the bag at third and down the line to score two runs for the game-winning single. It was the second walkoff hit of the season for Herbek.
Herbek was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBIs, a double, and was hit by pitches twice. For the season, he had hit safely in 13 of 14 games with multiple hits in 10 while hitting .448.
Redshirt junior outfielder Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Junior outfielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) was also 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Redshirt senior Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) drove in runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
Redshirt sophomore Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) earned the win after the blown save in the top of the ninth.
