HARRISONBURG, Va., April 14, 2009 ? James Madison pounded a season-high 21 hits and three pitchers allowed just five hits in a 20-2 victory over Virginia Military Institute on a soggy Tuesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU earned its third consecutive victory to improve to 20-17 overall. VMI suffered its third straight loss to fall to 13-21. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness after a delay of 58 minutes to start the game.
The offense for JMU scored at least nine runs for the fifth time in six games, averaging 13.2 runs. It was also the second time with at least 20 runs in that span. The first four hits of the game for the Dukes were home runs as they vaulted out to a 8-0 lead after two innings and added two in the fourth, three in the fifth, five in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
Eleven different players had a hit for the Dukes and nine registered multiple hits. JMU pounded 11 extra-base hits with six doubles, one triple, and four home runs. Seven different players scored multiple runs and six different players had multiple RBIs.
While the 21 hits were a season high, the five hits allowed were the second-lowest of the season for the Dukes. Sophomore Alex Valadja (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) improved to 3-3 with five innings allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Freshman Josh Futter (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) and sophomore James Weiner (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) had two strikeouts apiece in combining for the final three innings.
Individually for the offense, junior second baseman Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) went 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, two runs and three RBIs. Sophomore shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) went 2-for-3 with a home run, triple, three runs, and two RBIs. His replacement in the lineup, junior Kent Burford (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) finished the cycle with a double and a single and two RBIs.
