HARRISONBURG, Va., April 15, 2009 ? James Madison posted six runs in the first inning and four pitchers combined on a shutout in a 10-0 blanking of George Washington in a non-conference baseball game on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU improved to 21-17 with its fourth victory in a row. It was the second shutout of the season for the Dukes, which was preserved when the final out of the game was made on a runner thrown out at home plate. It was also the sixth time in seven games scoring at least nine runs. GWU fell to 16-20 on the season.
Junior David Edwards (Ocala, Fla./St. Cloud) registered one of his best starts of the season allowing just two hits with one walk and a season-high six strikeouts in five innings. He improved to 3-1. Three relievers combined for the final four innings to finish the first shutout for JMU since February 28 against Lafayette.
Junior second baseman Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) paced the offense for the second consecutive day with his second straight three-hit game, including a double. He also walked, scored twice, stole a base, and drove in a run while raising his batting average 28 points over the two days to .336 and extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
Fabiaschi was the only Duke with multiple hits as JMU scored its 10 runs on just nine hits while benefitting from 13 walks. Sophomore shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) doubled in a pair of runs, walked twice, scored twice, and stole three bases. Redshirt senior designated hitter Lee Bujakowski (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) hit a two-run home run.
A couple of JMU players extended hitting streaks as redshirt sophomore first baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) singled in the sixth to reach a 17-game streak. Redshirt junior right fielder Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) skirted a single through the right side in the bottom of the eighth in his sixth and final plate appearance to reach 28 games in his streak.
