FARMVILLE, Va., May 12, 2009 ? Longwood struck for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 9-6 victory over James Madison in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday evening at the Longwood Baseball Field.
LU improved to 26-20 on the season while JMU fell to 29-22. The teams split the season series with the Dukes having won three weeks earlier 16-14 with a six-run rally themselves in the bottom of the ninth.
The Lancers started the eighth-inning rally with an RBI double by right fielder Robby Newman. After a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt, second baseman Mike Stancik doubled to right to push across the tying and go-ahead runs. Left fielder David Smiy Jr. added two insurance runs with a home run to left.
JMU brought the potential tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, but senior Paul Heidler II struck out two straight batters to end the inning. He pitched the final two innings to earn the victory on senior night and improve to 4-1. Heidler allowed one hit and struck out three, all in the ninth.
Sophomore Alex Valadja (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) took the loss for JMU after allowing three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Senior Justin Wood (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) allowed three quick runs in the start before retiring eight consecutive batters and finishing with three runs on three hits in four innings.
