HARRISONBURG, Va., June 10, 2009 – James Madison senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) has been named the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association Division I state offensive football player of the year.
Landers was among 11 JMU players recently named to the all-state squads – five first-team honorees and six second-team selections. Sports information directors from throughout Virginia voted for the all-state teams.
Landers previously was named offensive player of the year in the Colonial Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference. He won the Bill Dudley Award that is presented annually to Virginia's top college player; he was named state offensive player of the year by the Roanoke Times; and he was runner-up for the Walter Payton Award as the top player nationally in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision.
JMU's other first-team all-state honorees included senior offensive tackle Terrence Apted (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Fagatuio), senior center Scott Lemn (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville), senior free safety Marcus Haywood (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) and junior return specialist Scotty McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes).
JMU's second-team selections included senior defensive end Hassan Abdul-Wahid (Centreville, Va./Westfield), junior offensive guard Dorian Brooks (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs), senior tailback Eugene Holloman (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside), senior cornerback Evan McCollough (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers), junior defensive end Arthur Moats (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland), and sophomore offensive tackle Theo Sherman (Danville, Va./Chatham).
Joining Landers in receiving the top state awards were Richmond defensive lineman Lawrence Sidbury as defensive player of the year, Richmond's Mike London as coach of the year and Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans as rookie of the year.
Landers in 2008 set JMU season records for touchdown passes (21), rushing yards (1,770), yards of total offense (3,304) and touchdown responsibility (37). He helped JMU to the CAA title and to a 12-2 overall record. The Dukes were the top seed for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs and reached the playoff semifinals.
Landers, Lemn, Haywood, McCollough and McGee were first-team All-CAA honorees; Abdul-Wahid, Apted and Holloman were second-team all-league choices; and Brooks, Moats and Sherman were third-team all-league honorees.
Lemn won the Rimington Award as the top center in the FCS, and he, Apted, Brooks and Sherman helped the Dukes average 38.1 points and 401.4 yards of total offense per game.
