HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 24, 2009 - Five James Madison University football players have been named to the College Sporting News' 2009 preseason Football Championship Subdivision All-America team.
Senior cornerback Scotty McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) was named to the first team as a return specialist; junior offensive tackle Theo Sherman (Danville, Va./Chatham) and senior defensive tackle Sam Daniels (Portsmouth, Va./Woodrow Wilson) were named to the second team; and senior offensive guard Dorian Brooks (Richmond, Va./Varina) and senior defensive end Arthur Moats (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) were named to the third team.
A total of 166 players representing 70 schools and 14 conferences were honored by CSN on three All-America teams and a group of honorable mention choices.
Since 2000, CSN has been the largest news organization exclusively covering the FCS at www.CollegeSportingNews.com and www.ChampionshipSubdivisionNews.com.
The 12-team Colonial Athletic Association in which JMU competes led all conferences with 47 players recognized, and no other conference had more than 16 honorees. The CAA had 12 of the 29 first-team selections.
McGee a year ago scored touchdowns on three punt returns and on a kickoff return. He averaged 29.1 yards on 22 kickoff returns and 12.9 yards on 23 punt returns and took part in 30 tackles and had an interception as a cornerback for the Dukes. McGee was first-team All-CAA as a punt returner and a second-team honoree as a kickoff returner a year ago. He was a 2008 first-team All-America choice as a kick returner by national coaches' association, and he was a 2009 first-team preseason All-America by The Sports Network.
Sherman last season was a key performer on an offensive line that helped JMU average 38.1 points and 401.4 yards per game, including 282.8 yards rushing. He was third-team All-CAA and second-team All-Virginia by the state's sports information directors' association and the Roanoke Times.
Daniels in 2008 was a JMU captain, and he took part in 42 tackles, including 12 for loss and six quarterback sacks. He was third-team All-Colonial Athletic Association in 2008 and a first-team 2009 preseason All-America honoree by The Sports Network.
Brooks a year ago joined Sherman as a key offensive line performer. He was second-team All CAA and honorable mention All-America by The Sports Network in 2008, and he was a 2009 second-team preseason All-America by The Sports Network.
Moats last season tied for third on the JMU team in tackles with 65 tackles, including 25 unassisted stops, 11.5 quarterback sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. He tied for the CAA lead in sacks and tied for third in the league in tackles for loss, and he was just off the team season record of 12 sacks. Moats was third-team all-conference a year ago.
