NEWARK, Del., Sept. 26, 2009 ? Delaware hit .307 and faced just one lead change the entire match in defeating James Madison 3-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association volleyball match on Saturday night at Viera Court.
Delaware, the two-time defending CAA champion, won by set scores of 25-18, 25-13, and 25-14 to improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the league. JMU dropped to 6-11 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.
JMU head coach Disa Garner commented, “Tonight the scores are not reflective of how we played. If you look at the box score, the kills, digs, and blocks were all relatively equal. The big difference was that we made quite a few more errors attacking. The service errors also hurt us at times along with some net violations and other things that cost us some runs.”
Katie Dennehy had 11 kills on 18 swings for a .611 attack percentage to lead the Blue Hens. Jess Chason posted 26 assists and six digs. Kim Stewart added 10 digs and three kills.
Sophomore Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) led JMU with 10 kills and .389 hitting. Freshman Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) had 28 assists at setter. Sophomore Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) posted six kills and 11 digs.
Garner added, “Kelly Turner played well tonight. I was really pleased with her performance. Holly passed and played great defense. Natalie Abel played well as well. We had some good performances. We got Dani [Danielle Erb] back in the lineup which was a big help. So we had a stronger lineup in there. Hopefully we're getting over the hump with some of our injuries. The players had a good attitude and were prepared; the unforced errors just hurt us in the end. Delaware's a good team though. We look forward to facing them again at o
