HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 23, 2010 - Four players scored in double figures and JMU shot 54% from the floor to defeat Presbyterian College 65-56 Tuesday night in the Harrisonburg Subregional of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic at the Convocation Center.
JMU won its third game in a row to improve to 3-1 while PC fell to 1-4 with the loss. The three-game winning streak is the first for the Dukes since a four-game run through the first six games of the 2009-10 season.
Junior Rayshawn Goins (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville) tied his season-high with 17 points and senior Denzel Bowles (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Junior Julius Wells (Toledo, Ohio/Libbey) scored 14 points while hitting four of his seven three-point attempts. He moved within six points of becoming the 24th player in JMU history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Junior Humpty Hitchens (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) chipped in 10 points for the Dukes
JMU outrebounded the Blue Hose 33-23 in the victory. The Dukes also benefitted from a 34-20 advantage in paint points and a 10-0 edge in fast break scoring.
Al'Lonzo Coleman led PC with 15 points and four steals. Pierre Miller and Khalid Mutakabbir added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
JMU held a 36-33 lead at the break only to see PC tie it on a three by Coleman. However, a Wells three was followed by a pair of layups by Goins for a quick 7-0 JMU run to give the Dukes a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Madison led 50-41 with 13:53 to go when Bowles exited with four fouls, giving the Blue Hose a chance to attack the post. A three by Josh Johnson and a jumper by Joshua Clyburn made it a two-possession game with 11:37 remaining.
The Dukes responded with a turnaround jumper by Goins and a three in the left corner by Hitchens to take the lead back to nine. Two more PC buckets brought the Blue Hose back within five when sophomore forward Andrey Semenov (St. Petersburg, Russia/Blue Ridge School), playing in place of the foul-hindered Bowles, hit a three and a driving layup from Wells on consecutive possessions for a 61-50 lead with 4:41 to go.
Semenov came up with another big play in the last two minutes. With JMU ahead 61-53, the Dukes ran down the shot clock and Bowles put up a baseline jumper with 1:26 to go. Semenov skied for the rebound and managed to get a hand on it for a tap to the wing and a fresh 35 seconds. JMU ran off another 18 seconds before Hitchens scored a layup for a 10-point lead and essentially clinching the victory.
In the first half, JMU held an early 16-12 lead when PC went on a 7-0 run to take its first lead on a Mutakabbir three-pointer with 12 minutes to go. The Blue Hose maintained that lead until the Dukes went on a 7-0 burst of their own with a Wells three, giving the host a 27-26 lead. Wells led all players with 11 points in the half and Bowles added 10 as JMU led 36-33 at the break.
In the day's first game, Bucknell led by as many as 11 at 24-13 with 6:55 to go in the first half. However, Princeton came back to tie it at 26-26 and took a four-point lead into the break, 30-26. The Tigers led 52-41 in the second half before Bucknell went on a 9-0 run to pull within a basket with 4:33 to go. However, Princeton never gave up the lead and pulled away for the 66-55 victory.
Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides each had 16 points for the Tigers while Mack Darrow posted 13. G.W. Boon registered 17 points for Buckne
