HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 30, 2010 - Fifth-ranked Duke had four players score in double figures as the Blue Devils defeated James Madison 75-58 Tuesday night at the JMU Convocation Center.
Duke stayed perfect on the season, improving its record to 7-0, while JMU evened its record at 3-3 with the defeat.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman guard Chelsea Gray (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's), who scored a team-high 15 points. Senior center Krystal Thomas (Orlando, Fla./First Academy) had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and senior guard/forward Karima Christmas (Houston, Texas/J. Frank Dobie) also tallied 14 points, while senior guard Jasmine Thomas (Fairfax, Va./Oakton)chipped in 11 points.
Both teams went back and forth for the opening eight minutes, but down 15-14, the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run to grab a 24-15 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half. Â Duke led by as much as 16 points and took a 43-32 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Duke answered every time JMU seemed to make a run and never allowed the Dukes to get closer than nine points.
JMU was led by senior center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), who posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, both a season high. Â Senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored a game-high 20 points.
"Obviously we're disappointed with the outcome. We came out and competed and we showed some promise," said JMU Head Coach Kenny Brooks. "We are a work in progress, and we cannot lose sight of the fact that that was a potential top-four team that has very little weaknesses. They shot the ball extremely well in the first half and really pushed out a lead, but I thought our kids did a good job of battling and not giving up."
"They were the aggressors tonight. They beat us on the boards. They went out and manhandled us sometimes, especially getting offensive rebounds and second-chance points."
The Dukes return to action on Thursday night when they visit Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood at 7 p.m.
