CLEARWATER, Fla., March 14, 2010 - Central Michigan jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back to defeat the James Madison softball team 10-3 in the finale of the South Florida Under Armour Showcase at Eddie C. Moore Field in Clearwater, Fla. on Sunday.
JMU finished its 10-day road trip with a 4-6 mark and is now 9-10 this season. Central Michigan improved to 7-6.
Dukes' starter Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) did not make it out of the first inning, giving up three runs on three hits and a hit batter in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
Center fielder Christine Novak led off the game with double to left field, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by shortstop Molly Coldren. Right fielder Katie Greenman walked following the sacrifice bunt and moved to third on the Coldre single. Catcher Jill Schulz ended Widner's day with a single to left field, scoring Greenman and Coldren.
Coldren finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Novak added two doubles and a run scored. Schulz had a team-high three runs batted in.
Junior right-hander Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) relived Widner and induced a groundout to prevent any further damage.
CMU added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Third baseman Amanda Patrick led off the inning with a walk and pinch runner Amber Olejniczak stole second. Second baseman Brittany Merchant made it 3-0 with a single to center field, scoring Olejniczak before scoring a run of her own on a wild pitch.
Merchant led the Chippewas' with three hits, including a double, three runs scored and two RBI.
Two more CMU runs in the fifth made it 7-0, before the Dukes got on the board with three runs in the sixth. Freshman pinch hitter Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) started the one-out rally with a walk ahead of a single by sophomore pinch hitter Casey Mansfield (Suffolk, Va./Isle of Wight). Sophomore pinch runner Michelle Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) was hit by the ball on the play, to give JMU two outs.
