HARRISONBURG, Va., March 19, 2010 - The James Madison softball team dropped a pair of games as it opened up the 2010 JMU Days Inn Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park on Friday. The Dukes lost game one 7-0 to Fordham before losing game two 3-1 to Winthrop.
The two losses drops JMU to 10-13 this season, while Fordham extended its winning streak to five games to up its record to 17-5. Winthrop split two games on Friday to run its record to 13-7.
Game two was a pitchers' duel with freshman right-hander Heather Dindinger (River, Va./Auburn) trading scoreless frames with Winthrop right-hander Cari Wooldridge through three innings.
The Eagles broke through for the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Lauren Levin led off the inning with a double down the left-field line before being lifted for pinch runner Melanie Andrea. One batter later, left fielder Veronica Berrie drove a 1-2 Dindinger offering into left center to score Andrea.
Wooldridge took care of the rest for Winthrop, limiting the Dukes' offense to three hits over seven innings. The senior gave up just one run, while walking one and striking out eight to improve to 7-5 this season.
The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Taylor Wright led off the inning with a triple down the right-field line, ahead of a one-out triple to right center by right fielder Ashleigh Jackson that scored Wright and ended Dindinger's day.
Dindinger gave up six hits, three runs, walked one and struck out three in 5 1/3 innings pitched. The loss dropped the freshman to 3-5 this season.
Junior right-hander Heather Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) entered in relief and walked the bases loaded, before a wild pitch allowed Jackson to score. The Columbus, Ohio-native escaped further damage by striking out pinch hitter Chelsey Schoenfeldt.
Wright went 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead the Eagle offense, while Levin added two hits, including a double.
JMU battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a one-out solo home run from senior left fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone). It was the first home run of the season for Dyson, and the 10th of her career. Two batters later, freshman center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) came within inches of tying the game, launching a double of the top of the fence in right center.
