PINEHURST, N.C., March 23, 2010 - James Madison sophomores Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) and Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) respectively finished tied for seventh and 11th to lead the Dukes to sixth place at Pinehurst #6 in the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday. There were 18 teams and 93 total golfers in the tournament.
JMU carded rounds of 300-298-312 for a 54-hole score of 598.
Sanmiguel recorded her first top-10 finish of the year and the third of her career. She shot a 73-73-75=221 to finish 5-over-par in the two-day event. Sakamoto carded a 74-74-76=224 to pick up her fifth top-15 showing this season.
Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) finished 43rd with a 73-78-81=232, while fellow junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeyrd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) completed her tournament one stroke back in a tie for 44th. Junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) rounded out the five-player team in a tie for 82nd.
Florida State's Lacey Agnew beat out Maryland's Christine Shimel by two strokes for the tournament's individual championship. Agnew carded a 4-under-par 212, to best Shimel's 71-68-75=214. Agnew's teammate Macarena Silva (67-77-73=217) finished third, followed by Sinead O'Sullivan of East Tennessee State (72-72-74=218) and Maria Salinas (74-74-70=218) in a tie for fourth.
Florida State was the only team to finish below par, firing a 287-290-286=863 to finish at 1-under. Maryland (298-297-301=896), was a distant second, followed by Campbell in third and East Tennesse State (304-295-304=903). North Carolina State rounded out the top five after shooting a 298-300-307=905.
The Dukes return to the course next Monday, April 5 in Farmville, Va. in the Tina Barrett Invitational.
