FARMVILLE, Va., March 31, 2010 - James Madison used a 12-run third inning to take command and a pair of freshmen had big games at the plate in a 17-13 victory over Longwood on Wednesday afternoon at Bolding Stadium.
JMU improved to 13-11 for the season and won for the seventh time in its last eight games. Longwood fell to 11-12 for the season.
According to JMU head coach Spanky McFarland, the outcome wasn't necessarily a surprise. He commented, "It was a typical Wednesday game of late with pitching staffs at the end of their rotations, tired arms, hitters feasting, the wind flying out, and an umpire not calling strikes. Put all of those ingredients together and you'll have scores like this."
JMU trailed 6-3 going into the third inning when the Dukes sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 12 runs on six hits with three Longwood errors. The inning featured a pair of home runs by freshman designated hitter Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), the first home runs of his JMU career. He hit a two-run shot with no outs for the third and fourth runs of the inning and added a grand slam with two outs for the final four runs of the frame. The six RBIs were a career high for Tenaglia.
Freshman right fielder Johnny Bladel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had a pair of singles in the inning and had hits in each of his first four at bats in the game, including his first career home run on the first pitch of the game. A strikeout in the seventh snapped a string of reaching base safely in nine consecutive plate appearances. The current CAA Rookie of the Week finished the game 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, four runs, and two RBIs.
Senior third baseman Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) and junior shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) finished with identical lines of one hit in four at bats with three runs and three RBIs. Each had a bases-loaded walk in the third inning while Browning had a two-run homer in the game and Herbek hit a double. Redshirt junior first baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) extended his JMU season-best hitting streak to 13 games with a double and three runs scored.
Senior right hander David Edwards (Ocala, Fla./St. Cloud) earned his first win of the season with 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one run on five hits and four walks.
Matt Gwaltney took the loss in relief for Longwood after allowing six runs on three hits and two walks in just 2/3 of an inning.
Right fielder Scott Kimble was 5-for-6 with four runs and two RBIs for the Lancers. First baseman Casey Havers was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs. Third baseman Phil Cerreto was 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs, and two walks. Designated hitter Justin Lacy had two hits, two RBIs, and two walks.
In the first inning, Bladel led off with his solo home run to center for his first collegiate home run. Knight reached on an error by the left fielder and moved to second on the play. He stole third and scored on an RBI grounder by Herbek, in which he also reached on an error. Herbek stole second, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch.
Longwood had a quick response in the bottom of the first. With one out, the Lancers posted four consecutive base hits, the third being a three-run home run by Cerreto to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lancers put together a two-out rally in the second with shortstop Brant Jones tripling to the gap in right center and Kimbl
