JMU SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER, CLINCHES CAA CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH

HARRISONBURG, Va., May 7, 2010 - James Madison swept a doubleheader against Colonial Athletic Association foe UNC Wilmington on Friday to clinch a berth in next week's CAA Championships in Hempstead, N.Y. The Dukes received a complete-game effort from freshman pitcher Cara Stecher (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) to win game one 5-3 at Veterans Memorial Park before setting a season-high with 18 hits in game two for a 9-1 win in six innings.
JMU improved to 22-31 overall and 10-10 in conference play. UNCW dropped to 10-40 and 5-14.
In game two, junior right-hander Olivia McPherson (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance) threw a three-hitter to improve to 6-5. She allowed just one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four in six innings pitched.
Amanda Davenport took the loss to drop to 2-12. She gave up nine runs, five earned, on 18 hits. The right-hander struck out one and walked none in 5 2/3 innings pitched.
Five players collected multiple hits for Madison, including junior catcher Katie Spitzer (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and sophomore shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) with three each. Burnham added two runs scored to her conference-lead, giving her 36 on the campaign while Spitzer added two RBIs to her team-high total of 29. Senior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run), freshman center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) and sophomore designated player Michelle Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) had two hits apiece.
First baseman Katie Houmard led the Seahawks offense, going 1-for-1 with a RBI and a walk. Second baseman Morgan Walters had a double and third baseman Jennifer Ladd went 1-for-2 with a single.
The Dukes grabbed an early 5-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and three in the second. In the first, Burnham led off with a single through the right side before moving to second on a single to left field by Simons.
