HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 14, 2011 – Junior outside hitter Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) collected 14 kills and James Madison hit .316 as a team to earn a 3-0 sweep over Hofstra in volleyball at Sinclair Gymnasium/Godwin Hall on Friday night.
JMU won by set scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 to pick up its third straight win and improve to 15-5 on the season and 5-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra has now lost four in a row to fall to 11-12 and 2-4 in league play.
“I thought we played a great volleyball match tonight,” head volleyball coach Lauren Steinbrecher said. “We executed our game plan against a very strong Hofstra team and keyed on the right players. Offensively we played smart and aggressive and defensively we were right where we need to be all night.”
Erb hit .423 on the night, finishing with 14 kills against just three errors in 26 attempts. The Tampa, Fla., native also added two digs, an assist and a solo block. Freshman middle blocker Lizzy Briones (Siloam Springs, Ark./Siloam Springs) contributed five kills on .500 hitting and a match-high five blocks while redshirt junior outside hitter Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added a match-high 15 digs to go with five kills, three blocks and an assist. Setters Megan Wiechmann (Sunland, Calif./Village Christian) and Kristi Richardson (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) combined for 34 assists with Wiechmann picking up four digs and Richardson contributing four blocks.
Senior outside hitter Holly Wall (Kaukauna, Wisc./Kaukauna) continued her all-around play with eight kills on .300 hitting to go with 10 digs, four blocks and two assists. Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Maguire (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had four block assists and five kills while sophomore libero Katie Daorai (Tampa, Fla./Plant) had 10 digs and a service ace.
Hofstra was led by Kelsie Wills with 12 kills and nine digs with Erika Charry adding four kills on .308 hitting and four blocks. Nikki Kinnier and Kylee Maneja tied for a team-high with 10 digs each. Catalina Charry drove the offense with 34 assists while adding nine digs and two blocks.
The Dukes limited the Pride to just .076 hitting while winning the blocking battle 12-6. JMU committed just nine errors in the match to hit .316. Hofstra collected 47 digs to Madison's 43.
